The Vernon Arms, Southrepps

Turnin' up the heat

We arrive nice and early so we can set up on the back of a truck and get lots of help from local residents and staff - thanks for that. We're about to get a sound check when we lose mains. When I say 'lose mains' I mean the power goes off throughout the pub. Then we hear the kitchen's on fire and the car park (where the dance floor has been carefully set up) is suddenly full of people whose dining has been rudely curtailed. Two fire engines arrive, the source of the fire is the fuse box in the kitchen and it looks like we're all going home. However - one chap calls in a favour or two and gets the promise of a small generator which appears a few minutes after the fire engines leave. The generator looks as though it could provide power for the whole village and it looks like we're back on.

We end up having one of our best nights ever. The sound was great, the response was really enthusiastic and the damage done to the pub was less than it might have been. We'd like to thank everyone who attended for making us feel very welcome indeed and we'd like to extend our best wishes to Paul and his family and staff for a swift return to normal business.

We won't forget this one!
